The five strangest caravan insurance claims, ever...

CaravanIf you are travelling in a caravan this bank holiday weekend, be sure to secure your corn on the cobs and check there are no east European immigrants hiding inside…

Towergate Bakers, the insurer, has provided us with these five very bizarre caravan insurance claims.

1. A broken lightbulb

One policyholder claimed for a light bulb that he dropped as he went to change a broken one. The total claim came to £1.30 and involved the submission of a claim form, processing of the claim and issue of a cheque. "A wholly uneconomic claim for both parties," said the insurer.

2. A fool such as I

One happy camper who had a burning love affair with Elvis, built a shrine to The King in his caravan. However, proving you can havetoo much of a good thing, the memorial caused its owner no end of troubleOne night, following a few drinks, the man fell asleep and one of the shrine's candles caused a fire. Thankfully, a neighbour raised the alarm and man was safely rescued – but unfortunately the caravan was damaged beyond repair.

3. Don't forget the handbrake

A couple on their first caravan holiday arrived at their destination, un-hitched the van, but forgot to put on the handbrake. Apparently the holidaymakers were quite keen to try out the caravan’s bed, but their amorous actions lead to the caravan rolling down a slope and ending up in a stream.

4. A load of cobblers

Another policyholder made a claim on her insurance for 50 corn-on-the cobs that were stolen from their caravan following a break-in.

5.  Lithuanian man

And finally – a couple were startled to discover a Lithuanian man squatting in their caravan over the winter, despite the caravan being parked in front of their house.

They had no idea he was in there until one day they entered the van and the place was trashed. The police caught up with him, but the couple agreed for him to be taken to a hostel rather than be arrested.

Unfortunately, the man escaped the hostel and broke in again to the same caravan. He was eventually arrested.
